A land made of water
The Netherlands is a land of water. Rivers, islands, polders, it makes our country unique. Fertile land which we can see during the drive to Buren. A varied landscape of old polders and modern farming takes us a little further south. This is the Netherlands of the 21st century. A modern society, where sometimes time seems to come to stand still for a moment.
The Princes of Orange
Today, we visit Buren, where an imposing castle once stood. A castle prestigious enough for the marriage of William of Orange and the local Anna of Buren in 1551. The castle is long gone, but the place still breathes history. By the way, did you know that our current King Willem Alexander participated incognito in the Elfstedentocht ice skating event in 1986 under the name Alexander van Buren? Let’s not forget that he is also the Earl of Buren.
Visscher Classique
There is no coincidence, we did not choose Buren as the destination of our trip only for its interesting history and connection with our royal family. In fact, in Buren we are visiting Visscher Classique, the nicest vintage car museum in the low countries. Nowhere else will you find such an extensive collection of particularly post-war French classic cars. Here we can wander around and see and touch French cars that are so familiar yet so rare. Obviously, you don’t have to stay at the Visscher Classique museum as you can also immerse yourself in history by visiting the old town of Buren by just walking there.
